Levi (Lapland)

Levi is located in the heart of Finnish Lapland and is one of the most popular destinations in northern Finland. Surrounded by snow-covered forests, vast landscapes, and Arctic silence, Levi offers unique nature experiences all year round. In winter, visitors are drawn to the northern lights, husky sled rides, snowmobile tours, and one of Finland's largest ski resorts. In summer, the region transforms into a paradise for hiking, cycling, and long days under the midnight sun.

dear(travel)diary,

I can't even say how long I've wanted to visit Lapland in winter. In any case, it's been on my travel bucket list for a loooong time. Not just because of the Northern Lights, but because of that very special winter atmosphere: endless snowy landscapes, snow-covered forests, and yet somehow a feeling of coziness—and all of that just before Christmas. Every time I saw pictures of husky sled tours, snowmobiles, or ski slopes in the middle of Lapland, I thought to myself: I want to go there!

When Join The Crew (JTC) asked me if I wanted to accompany them on their Creator Week in Lapland, I thought to myself: This is a dream come true! And even more than that. Because this time it wasn't a traditional group trip, but a week with nine creators – nine creative minds who were all there for the same reason: to capture this place, to experience it, and to be creative.

To be honest, I was almost more excited about this than I would have been about a “normal” trip. When I'm traveling with friends, I sometimes feel like I have to apologize when I stop to take photos, film, or capture a scene again. In Lapland, it was different. No one had to slow down, no one had to explain why a moment was important. On the contrary: we inspired each other, learned from each other, and worked creatively together.

Once we were there, everything felt even better than expected. The group, the atmosphere, the landscape—everything was just right. Lapland was not only a dream come true, but somehow even more beautiful than I had ever imagined.

xx Chiara

By the way: We were traveling in the middle of the polar night. The sun didn't really rise during our stay. When we had light during the day, it was actually only twilight. It was definitely a special experience. We made good use of the few hours of daylight and relaxed during the dark hours (or used them productively to work). At first, the constant darkness felt unfamiliar; I was never sure what time it was. But it also made the days seem a little slower.

WHERE YOU SHOULD EAT

We had a vacation home in Levi, so we always cooked at home. We also barbecued in the kotas. These are traditional huts from Lapland, usually made of wood. Kotas are often used as shelters or meeting places and offer a cozy place to warm up, eat together, or take a break in nature—especially in winter. They are usually round or hexagonal in shape and have an open fireplace in the middle, which is used for cooking and heating.

We only ate out once, at Wilderness Café Hanhipirtti during our snowmobile tour with Tokka Safari. We had delicious Lappish fish soup and sweet pastries for dessert. During a hike, we also warmed up at the “Secret Café” and enjoyed hot chocolate with the best view.

However, it is probably worth eating at the Immelkartano hotel restaurant.

ACCOMMODATION

The great thing about JTC is that they organize everything for you! Including accommodation. They did a fantastic job in Lapland. We stayed at Levikaira Apartments 9-14 and felt very comfortable there. The whole house was clean and cozy. Everyone had their own bed. The living and dining area was large, which meant we could spend time together there: cooking, playing games, watching movies, chatting, laughing, dancing. We always had a cozy fire going. One highlight, however, was the sauna. We were also able to do our laundry.

About JtC

Join The Crew (JTC) offers group trips with experienced guides or skippers in various areas within and outside Europe. You can easily book your trip on the JTC website. After booking, a crew area will be activated for you. Because JTC plans everything for you, all you have to do is book your flights and arrive at the agreed meeting point on the day of departure. How the trip itself unfolds then depends largely on the group. You decide what you want to do and see. Either way, you're sure to have a great time.
